Spectral Modeling of Sub-Mesoscale Mixing Processes in the Ocean

چکیده

The main long-term goal of the project is two-fold: to further develop a new venue in modeling of turbulent mixing using a new spectral theory of turbulence, the quasi-normal scale elimination (QNSE), and to improve the nowcasts and forecasts of the state of the ocean on sub-mesoand mesoscales. The QNSE theory brings turbulence modeling to a new level as it allows one to obtain analytical results in situations not amenable to analytical treatment within the Reynolds stress closure modeling approach. The QNSE theory is particularly useful in describing anisotropic turbulence with waves, the flows of central importance to oceanic and atmospheric circulations. We consider this theory as a viable alternative to the Reynolds stress modeling and we expect it to find a wide range of applications in the long range.

Inferring dynamics from the wavenumber spectra of an eddying global ocean model with embedded tides

[I] The slopes of the wavenumber spectra of sea surface height (SSH) and kinetic energy (KE) have been used to infer "interior" or surface quasi-geostrophic (QG or SQG) dynamics of the ocean. However, inspection of spectral slopes for altimeter SSH in the mesoscale band of 70 to 250 km shows much flatter slopes than the QG or SQG predictions over most of the ocean. Comparison of altimeter waven...

15 Years of Satellite Altimetry and Mesoscale Ocean Dynamics

The paper provides a review of recent results on mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, we have had an unprecedented 15 year high-resolution monitoring of the ocean mesoscale field. Altimetry is often used in mesoscale studies in synergy with other remote sensing techniques and in-situ data. This global, high-resolution data set has allowed oceanographers to quan...

Collaborative Proposal: Studies of Stirring and Mixing at the Submesoscale in the Ocean

The long term goal of the "Scalable Lateral Mixing and Coherent Turbulence" DRI, under which the PIs are funded, is to understand the processes that stir and mix tracers in the ocean on lateral scales of 100 kilometers to 10 meters, the so-called submesoscales. The specific long term goals of the PIs are to understand the influence of mesoscale strain in driving stirring and mixing at the subme...

Control of Lower-Limb Overturning Circulation in the Southern Ocean by Diapycnal Mixing and Mesoscale Eddy Transfer

A simple model is developed of the lower limb of the meridional overturning circulation in the Southern Ocean based on residual-mean theory. It is hypothesized that the strength of the lower-limb overturning ( ) is strongly controlled by the magnitude of abyssal diapycnal mixing ( ) and that of mesoscale eddy transfer (K ). In particular, it is argued that K. The scaling and associated theory f...

Modes of mesoscale sea surface height and temperature variability in the East Australian Current

[1] Mesoscale variability where the East Australian Current (EAC) separates from the coast is studied using sea surface temperature and surface velocity streamfunction observed by satellite and a regional numerical model. The mean circulation simulated by the model (the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS)) is compared to a high-resolution regional climatology, and the realism of the simulated...
